Life changes in an instant when a loved one receives a terminal diagnosis. Amid the whirlwind of questions, new treatments and uncertainty, we yearn to provide the best care possible—but sometimes, we need a little extra help.
Enter Southern California Hospice Foundation’s Heavenly Home, Orange County’s first and only nonprofit end-of-life care facility. Under the guidance of Executive Director Michelle Wulfestieg, Heavenly Home offers a unique blend of physical and emotional support in a warm, home-like setting.
Last fall, Reveille connected Drew Schlosberg, host of the podcast “Spotlight on the Community,” with Michelle to talk about Heavenly Home’s incredible mission. Touched by the work they do, Drew was eager to hear more—especially to take a deep dive into the story of one of the people whose lives have been touched by the home.
Nine months after their initial chat, Reveille reunited Michelle with Drew and she, along with the widow and daughter of Solon Goodson, a former Heavenly Home resident, went to the studio in San Diego to share Solon’s story. Together, all three provided insight on Solon’s touching journey at Heavenly Home. As a large man, Solon’s care had become challenging for his family, but Southern California Hospice Foundation was able to step in and provide the support they desperately needed. Beyond physical care, Solon found friendship and dignity in his final days. His heartwarming response to staff greetings became a testament to the home’s impact: “It’s good to be seen.”
