The Samueli Foundation is once again reshaping philanthropy with the announcement of $15 million in Breakaway and Build OC Fund grants for 89 Orange County nonprofit organizations. Created in direct response to nonprofits’ calls for flexible funding, these funds allow organizations to invest where they see the greatest need, whether that’s replacing roofs, purchasing buses, upgrading technology, investing in staff or improving the spaces where communities receive care and support. By trusting nonprofits to direct funding where it will have the greatest impact, the Foundation is strengthening organizations from the inside out. Now in the second round of funding, the Foundation has awarded $32 million through the Breakaway and Build OC Funds to 235 nonprofits in less than a year. Their amazing approach also inspired the Sun Family Foundation, who came alongside to grant an additional $1.5 million.
Team Reveille was honored to help bring this amazingly generous milestone to life through strategic communications that highlighted how the Foundation’s trust-based approach reflects what nonprofits have long said they need to build stronger organizations and better serve their communities.
In addition to securing media coverage, we developed custom social media toolkits for the Samueli Foundation, Sun Family Foundation and all 89 grant recipients, making it easy for organizations to share the announcement and amplify the impact across their own networks. So far the news earned front-page coverage in The Orange County Register, in addition to stories with NBC4 Los Angeles, the Orange County Business Journal, Newport Beach Independent, the Stu News publications and additional opportunities still in progress, helping elevate a model of philanthropy that is gaining momentum.
