The Smartest Fix For Homelessness Might Be Stopping It In The First Place

For many Orange County families living paycheck to paycheck, homelessness can arrive quickly. A job loss, a car repair, or a medical emergency can be all it takes to tip a household into crisis. Three local nonprofits–Families Forward, Pathways of Hope, and South County Outreach–are working to prevent that from happening. Their efforts just received a major boost through a $7.5 million investment from the Samueli Foundation. Building on the success of an earlier $1.5 million pilot, each organization has now received $2 million in flexible funding to help families stay in their homes and keep their basic needs met during difficult times.

The results are already telling a powerful story. Nearly 300 families have remained housed and out of crisis, showing what is possible when support arrives before the bottom falls out. We had the privilege of working with these powerhouse organizations to help share their story with the OC Register’s Andre Mouchard, who captured it all with heart and insight.
