In the fight against human trafficking, awareness and recognition of the dangers by those most vulnerable, especially our children, are important. Two influential leaders in Orange County, Dr. Shauntina Sorrells, Chief Program Officer for the Samueli Foundation and Dr. Sandra Morgan, PhD, RN, Director of the Global Center for Women and Justice (GCWJ), have come together for this issue. Their goal is to educate middle schoolers across Orange County’s public schools and equip them with skills for staying safe.
Thanks to an $825,000 grant from the Samueli Foundation, Vanguard University (VU) is launching its three-year pilot program, “Safe Kids, Safe Communities,” this fall through the institution’s GCWJ. VU students will be trained to serve as peer educators and facilitators who will deliver interactive, trauma-informed classroom curriculum about human trafficking prevention to local school children. In addition to educating students, the program will provide professional development for current teachers and school staff.
Reveille was privileged to come alongside the GCWJ in sharing this announcement with our local media. The story was included in the Orange County Business Journal and The Orange County Register, and we are looking forward to bringing in additional media to learn more about this program once it is up and running later this fall..
