Loneliness is one of the biggest risk factors for disease in older adults. Meals on Wheels Orange County’s mission is to help older adults meet their social and nutritional needs. Not only do they serve more than 20,000 at-risk older adults with three nutritious, healthy and delicious prepared meals five days per week, the weekly meals are delivered by a friendly volunteer who also offers a bit of socialization and a smile to the older adults. Recently, Reveille was tasked with shining a light on extra-special deliveries made during the holiday season.
We started the morning at the Meals on Wheels’ kitchen, where all meals are prepared, packed and loaded onto trucks then taken to more than 20 senior centers and other locations throughout the county. We met up with Fariba, a board member and volunteer, and got to see the smiles she brought to those on her route. She delivered meals for the week and a special gift that included a 2024 calendar, socks and other essential items to help brighten the seniors’ day.
This heartwarming story was shared on four live morning segments on KTTV’s Good Day LA with Bob DeCastro, who reminded viewers that volunteers are always needed, no matter the season. In fact, if any of our subscribers are interested in signing up, please visit mealsonwheelsoc.org.
