In Orange County, where one in 10 people is food insecure, a suburban farm located in the heart of Irvine is helping to address the serious situation. It’s a collaboration between Second Harvest Food Bank, A.G. Kawamura (former Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture and chairman of Solutions for Urban Agriculture) and the University of California’s South Coast Research & Extension Center known as Harvest Solutions Farm. The nearly six million pounds of food grown since its August 2021 founding (happy third birthday, Harvest Solutions Farm!) are picked by volunteers and are placed in the hands of those in need within just a couple days. It’s truly bearing fruit (and veggies!).
To highlight this amazing initiative, Reveille secured an in-depth profile piece with Modern Farmer, an international publication geared toward building resilience within the food system in North America. Five detailed interviews with various voices involved at the forefront of this program—the collaborators, in addition to a volunteer and a client who benefits from the Farm’s beautiful bounty—were interwoven to showcase the full scope and impact of Harvest Solutions Farm and how it is helping families in need across Orange County enjoy farm-fresh nutrition like never before, inspiring countless others across the United States and Canada.
