The California Association of Food Banks (CAFB) has been a driving force in the fight against food insecurity, championing the essential SUN Bucks program (also known as Summer EBT) in collaboration with their food bank partners across the state. With nearly 1 million eligible children still unregistered as the August 31 deadline quickly approached, CAFB knew they needed to take action. Partnering with Second Harvest Silicon Valley, The Save Mart Companies and a Lucky Store in San Jose, CAFB hosted an interactive media event to raise awareness of the deadline and ensure families with eligible children received the information they needed to access the $120 benefit to purchase food at the grocery store before the deadline!
Reveille invited San Jose-based media to join Diana, a mom of three and San Jose resident, as she put her SUN Bucks EBT to use in her local Lucky Store. She shared how much the program alleviated the additional stress and anxiety that comes from feeding her children during the summer months when they no longer have access to their daily, two school-provided meals. The story was featured in Mercury News, KCBC-AM, NBC News Bay Area and more, ensuring folks throughout the area were able to receive the information they needed to apply for the program before the deadline.
